Früher war alles besser!

Besser gesagt: leichter,
zumindest in der Portraitmalerei vor der Renaissance.

More precisely: easier – at least in pre-renaissance portrait paintings.
Da genügten „Punkt, Punkt, Komma, Strich“ und fertig war das (Madonnen-)Mondgesicht!
Dot, dot, comma, dash - smiley (madonna-)face in a flash.
Doch dann kamen da Vinci, Botticell, Dürer & Co. und fragten sich: „Warum einfach,
wenn´s kompliziert auch geht?!“
But then, da Vinci, Botticelli, Dürer & Co. appeared and asked: "Why easy, if it works complicated, too?!"
Auf der Suche nach dem perfekten Ebenbild – dem Bauplan der Schönheit – wurde seziert, skizziert und skaliert.
Searching the perfect image – the blueprint of beauty – they dissected, sketched and scaled the human face.
So entstanden „La Gioconda“, die „Geburt der Venus“ oder die „Maria mit der Birnenschnitte“.
In this way, „La Gioconda“, „The Birth of Venus“ or „Maria mit der Birnenschnitte“ were created.
Später ging der aktuelle Beauty-Trend hin zu dicken Pausbäckchen und Tripple-Kinn (Rubens).
In later times, the beauty trend tended towards chubby cheeks and tripple chins (Rubens).
Zwischenzeitig waren „ätherische Wesen“ à la Bouguereau „en vogue“.
During the following age, "ethereal" characters à la Bouguereau have been "en vogue".
Aber auch das Mondgesicht erlebte seine Renaissance – etwa bei Jawlensky.
In the 20th century, the „smiley-face“ had a renaissance in art - for example by Alexej Jawlensky’s Mystical Heads and Saviour’s Face.
Sich portraitieren (zu lassen), ist wohl ein Ur-Bedürfnis des Menschen.
It seems to be a fundamental human need to be portrayed.
Das beweist die grassierende Selfie-Manie im Zeitalter der digitalen Photographie.
This is proved by the rampant selfie-mania in the age of smartphones and digital photography.
Wobei die Unterbelichtung dieser (Selbst-)Portraits oft in einem bemerkenswerten Maße ...
What a coincidence, that the frequently observed underexposure of these (self-)portraits often correlates remarkably...
